Melkor's Song
Melkor’s Song
In my land, I obliterate harmony and peace,
An ocean of shadow where the weak will break.
In chains the stars twist and they bend to my will,
And power is the root from which my life is blessed.
Chaos is the tearing of sky and sea,
I demand a world that the strong must control.
Everyone’s will breaks in my kingdom,
And joy is a means to set me free.
Power hungers, devours, and never gives,
For all beauty dies in my sacred land.
Alone I sing, and alone I live,
The weak forgotten, and all shall echo my name.
From me flows a hunger, no bound, no end,
A discord eternal, that I’ll lead with glee.
For the lyrics of Melkor’s song, I wanted to make it a direct parallel of Eru’s song. Every line is a distorted version of Eru’s lyrics. I wanted to make it seem like Melkor stole Eru’s song, corrupted and bent it to his design, and then shot it back out and into the world. It conveys a very dark and selfish outlook of the world. The population of Middle Earth would certainly be extremely confused when they hear almost the same lyrics but slightly changed to appeal to Melkor’s agenda. This would further corrupt people and brainwash them into following and worshipping Melkor.
Instrumental Song: “Libra, Creature Of Night - Elden Ring Nightreign OST” Libra, Creature Of Night - Elden Ring Nightreign OST Official Soundtrack Original Score
When reading about Melkor’s stark contrast to Eru, focusing on sowing confusion and discord, this song immediately came to mind. The instrumental song that I chose was written for a villain named Libra from a video game called “Elden Ring Nightreign”. “Elden Ring Nightreign” is a sequel to “Elden Ring” which is what I got Eru’s song from. These games have excellent soundtracks and through their songs, they are able to convey so many different messages. Like Melkor slowly corrupts and controls people by playing the “devil on your shoulder” character, Libra will repeatedly show up throughout the game to try and make deals with the player. However, these deals are always double edged swords, similar to that of a monkey’s paw. The song itself plays when the player finally confronts and clashes with him in a major battle. In my opinion, this song is one of the most disorienting songs I have ever heard. The tempo randomly changes throughout the song. The song constantly goes from sounding slightly calm to completely chaotic and uncontrollable in the span of a few seconds. Some parts of the song sound so convoluted that it’s hard to even make out what instruments are being played. This is all by design. This character is an agent of chaos and wants the world to burn.
I really like how you paralleled Melkor’s song with Eru’s. That idea of taking something pure and twisting it just slightly is such a perfect way to show how corruption works in Tolkien’s world. Your point about how people would be confused hearing such a similar song makes me think about how deception is one of Melkor’s most powerful tools — he doesn’t always destroy outright, but instead distorts what already exists. I also thought your music choice was really fitting. The way you described the tempo shifts and chaotic elements connects perfectly to Melkor’s desire to dominate through disorder. It really helped me imagine what it might feel like to hear his song compared to Eru’s original theme
